Rock Crawling in Las Vegas

Right at the moment I lost my footing on some slippery sand stone and felt my medial collateral ligament stretch beyond its limitations it dawned on me that I would have to drive a Jeep up and over this obstruction of boulders. Not only would I have to navigate steep, slick rocks, I would also have to attempt to drive on 3 wheels, learn to control the momentum of a 2 ton vehicle and try not to damage the vehicle while doing this.

What an adrenaline rush!

Going out with Las Vegas Rock Crawlers instantly gave me a white-knuckle experience as I approached the first obstacle. My guide walked me through the details and he showed me the preferred route yet I was still as tense and focused as I have ever been.

The Jeep inched up the rock wall and the creaking and bending began. I cinched down my seat belt again. I gently pressed on the gas and the Jeep leapt up and over the first boulder and I slammed on the brakes. All was good. I was still getting the thumbs up. I check the seat belt once more and leaned my head way out the window. I really should have paid a bit more attention in that high school physics course.

“Do you see this line? This is where you need to be, you don’t want to be in that hole!” My guide shouted instructions as the jeep pitched up at a 45 degree angle and the view out of the passenger side window was obstructed by a very large boulder seeking refuge inside the vehicle.

From this vantage point I could see blue sky and boulders. I had to feel my way through the obstacle. I kept my eyes on the guide and he walked me through the canyon of shattered rock faces and sandy crevices. Left. Right. Up. Down. My hands gently caressed the steering wheel right before they held on tight as the jeep slid off the rock and over onto a boulder the size of a small car.

The jeep crested the apex of the first hill and the spectacular view of the Valley of Fire State Park lay out before me. What a scene. I looked for a high five and a large celebration but I was just warming up. The next few hours I would crawl, climb, bounce and jiggle my way over scenes I would be cautious to even attempt to climb. By the time we raced around on the sand dunes I felt like I could tackle anything and my ability to control the jeep had improved dramatically.

I wonder if my wife will let me get one of these Jeep Wranglers?
