Travel Tip Wednesday: Pool Tips & Protecting Yourself In The Summer Sun

Summer Solstice is today which means the longest day of the year.  Here in Las Vegas it is also a wake-up call that triple digit temperatures are here for the next few months.  Now we know since it’s summer, everyone wants to have that nice glow and a tan body when hanging out poolside but here are some tips to help keep you from burning and a trip to the hospital from heat exhaustion and dehydration.

Cover up: Sunscreen is your best friend in the summer heat, especially in Las Vegas.  With temperatures regularly in the triple digits, it’s best to apply sunscreen every couple of hours in the desert. And opt for the lotion, not the spray as you’ll be better protected. Also even if you tan easily, opt for at least SPF 30 or higher.

Hat it up: Don’t forget to leave your hotel room without a hat; you will be thankful for that little bit of shade covering your face.

Stay hydrated: The summer brings squelching heat to Las Vegas which means you need to be careful of dehydration.  Sitting poolside, make sure to ask your cocktail waitress for a cup of ice water every time they make a pass by.

Electrolytes are your friend:  Feeling a bit sluggish?  Opt for a Gatorade, Powerade, Coconut Water or something similar that will give you a little pick me up.  You may think because you are in Las Vegas a Strawberry Daiquiri or Pina Colada poolside will do the trick but those are loaded with just sugar, no electrolytes.

Sun/Shade: You are a sun worshiper but make sure to take yourself out of the heat and spend some time in the shade, it will help you last throughout the day.

Take a dip: Make sure you aren’t just laying out, take a dip in the pool to cool your body off

Beat the heat?: Well you can’t escape it but if you are trying to avoid the hottest part of the day, start your morning off at the pool or finish your day at the pool.  You’ll still get plenty of sun and not feel like you are melting in the 110 degree heat.

Keep cool: Las Vegas casinos pump the air conditioning on high during the summer, take a walk inside and cool your body down.
